About Joseph Yu
Joseph Yu is a sought after trombone performer, he had performed with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Macau Philharmonic Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra. Joseph is the Head of Brass at Mount Waverley Secondary College and brass tutor at Camberwell Girls Grammar School in Melbourne. He is the Music Director and co-founder (with †David Singh 1991-2017) of the John Mallinson Youth Band and Youth Band Program based in Melbourne, and the conductor of the Moorabbin City Brass.
He graduated in music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong with First Honour and at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester UK with PPRNCM in trombone performance, the highest performance diploma awarded by the college. He undertook post-graduate studies at the University of Melbourne in 2004 and obtained a Master of Music degree in Trombone Performance.
Joseph Yu is an experienced band conductor and brass instructor. His experience encompasses primary and secondary schools, youth bands, university bands and community bands. Under his baton, many bands have won prizes and excellent comments in inter-school music festivals and competitions. He also is a keen educator. He was the conductor of the University Wind Ensemble at the University of Melbourne from 2005-2007 and as a brass tutor at Melbourne Youth Music Council (2005-2008).
Joseph was the co-founder of the Hong
Kong Festival Wind Orchestra and the Hong Kong Young Musicians Wind
Orchestra (HKYMWO), until 2003, he was the chairman of the HKYMWO.
In 2009 he was invited as a guest conductor for the Hong Kong Metropolitan Wind Ensemble to perform in the Jeju International WInd Ensemble Festival in South Korea. In 2011 he was a Faculty member for the newly founded Slider Asia Trombone Festival in Hong Kong and a guest teacher at the Hong Kong International Band Conducting Symposium. He also has given countless band workshops, and his former students are found worldwide in professional orchestras as well as teaching at tertiary institutions.
